The challenge they want to solve

Waste sorting remains a persistent challenge. Sorting quality issues are a key pain point for waste management operators, who also face regulatory obligations to enhance recycling performance. Significant sorting errors persist, leading to high costs in waste treatment, logistics, insurance, and lost opportunities (estimated at ~€450 per ton). In line with a European Directive, French municipalities are increasingly required to enforce effective waste sorting among residents. In selective collection, 100 tonnes typically include 17-25 tonnes of sorting errors, generating substantial financial losses across the waste value chain.

The impact they have

Lixo addresses these challenges with an AI-powered solution deployed on waste collection trucks. By the end of 2024, over 55,000 tonnes of waste were analysed monthly. Lixo combines behavioural insights, targeting awareness campaigns in underperforming neighbourhoods, with advanced data analysis to optimise waste streams and recycling capacity. Safety measures reduce sorting errors, CO₂ emissions, and fire risks, while protecting workers by detecting hazardous items. Lixo has demonstrated the ability to reduce sorting errors by up to 50% in highly contaminated areas. For example, addressing errors costing €1.5 million per year can yield a 25% reduction, translating to savings of €375,000 annually.

The way we measure it

We measure the volume of waste analysed (in tons) the evolution of the contamination score (index) and the number of awareness campaigns (per year).
